Leighton Contractors

Leighton Contractors Northern Region has been part of the Queensland construction industry since our first Brisbane office opened 45 years ago.

As one of Australia.s largest contractors, we specialise in challenging projects.

Our role includes project development and construction for civil, defence, water, rail, bridge, airport, tunnel, road, building and industrial projects.

These include past and present projects such as the SAFELink Alliance, Gateway Upgrade Project, Inner Northern Busway, North South Bypass Tunnel, Green Square, Wivenhoe Dam Spillway Upgrade, Port of Brisbane Motorway and FPE Port of Brisbane Seawall.

Leighton Contractors Northern Region offer a range of project development and contracting skills and services to private and public clients and take a whole-of-project focus.

Alongside the issues such as budget, timelines, design and safety, we also have teams devoted to stakeholder and community relations and environmental management.

We also are able to call upon the skills, experience and resource base of our National office to get the best results for our clients.

Our current projects include:

  • The $700 million SAFElink Alliance (with Main Roads, BMD Constructions, Arup and Maunsell Australia) to upgrade the Ipswich Motorway - Wacol to Darra. Works include widening the motorway to six lanes between Gailes and Darra, upgrading the Centenary Highway interchange and earth and bridge works for the Darra to Springfield rail line.
  • Brisbane's North South Bypass Tunnel (NSBT). This $2 billion project is due for completion by 2010. The 6.8km NSBT is Brisbane's largest ever road infrastructure project and includes 4.8km of tunnels under the busy Queensland state capital.
  • The $1.8 billion Gateway Upgrade Project including the duplication of the Gateway Bridge, the creation of a new shared pedestrian and cycle path on the new structure, upgrades to 20km of the Gateway Motorway, refurbishment of the existing Gateway Bridge and maintenance of the facility over a 10 year period.
  • The $333 million Inner Northern Bypass (INB): Queen Street to Upper Roma Street will be a vital link for the Brisbane city commuters. The project features a dedicated busway tunnel, below ground busway station in the King George Square carpark and a busway station at the Transit Centre, providing a link with the Roma Street Railway Station.
  • The $195 million Ipswich/Logan Interchange Upgrade, including the creation of a new 'upside down' interchange which uses underpasses, instead of overpasses for on and off ramps. The project will assist in bringing 2.5km of the Ipswich Motorway up to a National Highway standard.

Main Roads logo

Main Roads

Main Roads looks after Queensland's 34,000km state-controlled road network - the highways and other main connecting roads in Queensland. This task involves planning, designing, building and maintaining the roads and associated infrastructure (such as bridges) on these roads.

Main Roads works in close partnership with local governments, industries and communities to determine priorities for work on the state-controlled network. This network carries 60-70% of Queensland's traffic. It is the lifeblood of the state's economy and regional development. The network helps all Queenslanders' quality of life by giving them access to jobs, health, education, recreation and other services.

As well as having responsibility for planning, designing, building and maintaining Queensland's state-controlled roads, Main Roads has an important role to play in the management of activities that occur within the reserves that contain the road infrastructure including pavements and traffic signs.

In general, Main Roads does not own the land on which state-controlled roads are constructed. The land is Crown Land under the initial management and control of Department of Natural Resources and Mines. However Main Roads has, within the Transport Infrastructure Act, the primary management role for most activities that occur on this land.

Brisbane City Council

Brisbane is on the verge of an infrastructure revolution, with Brisbane City Council implementing a series of major projects to improve traffic flow and encourage greater use of public transport.

Council manages Australia's largest local government budget, so is in a key position to drive employment growth in infrastructure delivery in the city as these initiatives roll out.

One project is under construction, while others are in the early planning and public consultation stage. The projects are:

  • Green Bridge, a pedestrian, cycle and bus bridge linking the University of Queensland's St Lucia campus and Dutton Park
  • North-South Bypass Tunnel (NSBT), which will enable motorists to bypass the central business district to travel from Woolloongabba to Bowen Hills
  • Airport Link, which is proposed to connect Brisbane's northern suburbs to the Inner City Bypass and the NSBT at Bowen Hills
  • Hale Street Link, which is proposed to link South Brisbane and Milton.

Council manages these significant traffic and transport initiatives in partnership with a range of industry groups to provide world-class infrastructure that will further improve the quality of life in our city.

The team overseeing this program is Council's Major Infrastructure Projects Office (MIPO), which has about 25 staff. When projects are at their peak there are up to 60 contractors and consultants working with the MIPO team.

Council is evaluating two competing bids for the NSBT and, if a contract is awarded, construction could begin by mid-2006.

Green Bridge is rapidly taking shape, with most of the approach road completed and work on the deck of the cable stay bridge soon to begin.

Council and the Queensland Government have formed a partnership to progress Airport Link and investigate opportunities for integration of Airport Link and the proposed Northern Busway.

A feasibility study is under way for Hale Street Link, which includes community consultation activities.

2006 will be a pivotal year for Brisbane's future infrastructure, with some key decisions to be made regarding these projects, which could change the face of Brisbane for many years to come.
